Because the ones that drink alcohol usually drink it in public or among friends at first in order to give the impression that they're liberal, cool, sophisticated, pro-west, intelligent, free-will fanatic?
Pork is still something that you eat. In the end it'll still look like meat. If it was shaped into a pig they'd probably eat it. ;)
I think looking at my experience, pork was always unfamiliar teritory. It is hard to find it in Egypt and no one ate it around me. So culturaly i rejected it. While alcohol is everywhere in Egypt. It took me a while to break that cultural block, i am not even religious and for a while wouldnt eat pork.
I think I am like that too... Even though I ate pepperoni pizza for lunch as a kid.. the years I spent in Egypt made it hard for me to think about eating it... I do not think it is a religious decision.. I actually feel physically sick at the concept.
ah i have a question. a senegalese woman told me that muslims are allowed to drink alcohol, in moderation during one hour out of the day following the final prayer in the evening. is that true?
hehe, a question I've asked so many times. I think its more of a cultural thing. Many non-Muslims would never think of cooking a cat or a dog and eating it, they would puke at the idea. Same for us, we're not culturally brought up to eat pork, and the idea makes us sick. But alcohol is merely a drink, and has other advantages other than mere taste i.e intoxication....so it's easier to accept.
And no, ''the ones that drink alcohol'' don't do it for veimage. There are plenty of Muslims who drink secretly even, because they enjoy it, but would rather society not find out. And believe me, waaaaay more of the Muslim world drink alcohol than people would like to believe.
when someone tells you for all your life pork is gross you believe them. i don't eat it but i drink, first - it's not very appealing, second - you're used to being grossed out by it and third, pork is 7aram but there are many other non-7aram alternatives and are equally as satisfying. while drinking has no other non-haram equally satisfying alternative.
i guess it's hard to make sense of this but what do people care anywayz - why do people focus on the littelest stupidest things that concern muslims and islam, i mean seriously who gives a rats ass what i eat or don't eat, drink or don't drink, whys is this even worthy of a discussion.
it's the statement that anti-muslims use to argue how hypocritical muslims can be and i pitty the fools that use such frivolous and flaky arguments like this pathetic excuse of an example!
nora you've been in america for too long - come back
Luli: You're a bit bitter and aggressive... You've spent too long in the Middle East! :o) What's going on? Anything is worthy of discussion.. even if you feel it to be a trivial point! To each his own opinion and discussions..
I was seriously wondering what the difference is in the people's heads? I was actually wondering that because I have started to feel a difference too...
people make this argument a lot, and i think it's great that you are not making this argument. i am happy for that. and you're right, i have been to the middle east for too long. how bout we go to madagascar?
I think what is interesting though, that there was an article in Al Masry Al youm by Al Banna, the other day about the Quraneen [these are people, bless them, do not believe in Sunna or ahadith, they only believe in the literal meanings of Quran].
Anyhow, they argue that Eating pork and drinking alcohol is not sinful since it is not explicitly mentioned in Quran. just reading about their believes is very refreshing as they are very liberal in nature.
i cant find part one of the article. which is the interesdting part. part 2 surprisingly was published today http://www.almasry-alyoum.com/article.aspx?ArticleID=69855
Memz: Thanks for the link. It was in Arabic so I could not read it... tried to find it in the English version but I couldn't. It's cool. I'll research it later.. Thanks
A lot of observant Muslims who complain about other Muslims drinking alcohol don't realize that many of us who choose to drink are not religious in the first place. If you believed in the commandments, would doing forbidden things to look cool or liberal even cross your mind? Precisely. Not that anyone who chooses to drink does it to look cool or liberal... unless you're still in elementary school. Being from a Muslim family doesn't necessarily mean you have Islamic beliefs.
